Buffer overrun detected! when starting Call of Duty (1.0)

Hello Intel,

I have an Intel i5 3210M CPU with an Intel HD 4000 graphics core. Since driver version 15.33.22.64.3621 (published ~May 2014) the game crashes shortly after starting CoDSP.exe (Singel Player) or CoDMP.exe (Multiplayer). So the game tries to start up and immediately crashes (black screen, Windows error sound, "hidden" error message):

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Program: .......(path)\Call of Duty\CoDSP.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated."

CoD2.png

Google told me that I'm not the only one with the same problem:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library: Buffer Overrun - Microsoft Community

AMD & Nvidia had also this issue some time ago but they fixed it obviously in their drivers (e.g. Nvidia in v195.39, see changelog).

I tested a lot things which might help you to solve this problem:

1) All drivers since 15.33.22.64.3621 (inclusiv) cause this issue (also the latest 15.33.35.64.4176 ! )

2) With driver version 15.33.14.64.3412 (and older) the game works flawlessly and therefore doesn't crash.

---> There must have been a change between these two version which causes  these crashes since this point in time.

3) There is a workaround for the problematic driver versions (see SteamCommunity): copying and changing the name of one of the two "game-lauchers" (CoDSP.exe/CoDMP.exe) into "mohaa.exe" solves the problem when a problematic driver version (15.33.22.64.3621 and above) is installed!!! This is quite crazy. Mohaa should stand for the computer game "Medal of Honor: Allied Assault". However when using a random name like abc.exe the game crashes again while starting...

---> It looks like renaming the .exe's to mohaa.exe forces the driver to use an internal driver profile (created by Intel for MoHAA), which is obviously also compatible with Call of Duty (1). Therefore this workaround makes it possible to use the latest Intel graphics driver(s) with Call of Duty 1. I know, this sounds quite crazy...but it is like that ;-)

Can you please  have a look at this driver issue and change it in the next release? It looks like resolving this issue shouldn't be that complicated for Intel engineers.

PS: I use Windows 7 x64 Professional and the retail version of CoD1 without Steam... but Steam users are probably also bothered (see my links above).

Thank you very much!

Official Black-screen thread - We need your help!

Hello Graphics Communities!

For a very long time now we've been trying to track down, diagnose, and correct an issue that seems to be happening all across the board with Intel® Graphics.  Users, for various reasons - seem to have issues with OEM systems (and Intel® NUC's) losing their display for different events.

  • Installing new drivers
  • Rebooting
  • Computers idling, going into sleep or hibernation
  • Other random events

We have run into a stumbling block in fixing this issue, and that is that we are unable to reproduce the symptoms above.  We have ordered exact-matching systems, displays and cables - and matched our configurations to those of the users having problems, and we are completely unable to reproduce the problem.  The issue is complex, but in this particular case - it stems from the fact that two users with the same configuration are not guaranteed to have the problem, it varies from user to user, system to system, display to display.

What we at Intel® are asking now though is 2-fold.  If you are one of these users (or a business) experiencing a consistent black-screening issue as mentioned above, we would like to procure your COMPLETE system configuration.  This means, we want you to ship us (at our expense) - the System (desktop or laptop), display (TV, monitor) AND the cable (hdmi, dp, dvi, vga) used by your system when it starts to have a blackscreen failure.  If you are willing to do this, you should be aware that we will keep your system for an extended period, and will compensate you by replacing your setup.

NOW!  Even if you are not willing to send us your system, and would just like to inform us that you have a black-screen issue.  That is okay too. Even if you have already submitted this info in some of our other black-screen threads, feel free to submit it here too.  Please submit the following information into this thread so that we can continue to document all possible instances of it.  Just copy and paste the below list and put in relevant information (completely!).  *NOTE* If you have not already done so, please update your BIOS and Display Driver to the latest version available.  We cannot accept a report of a failing configuration that is not up to date.  Additionally, if you are running your display through a 3rd party device such as a projector or an AV/R (receiver), you need to show that the problem still occurs without the extra device connected (a direct connection from system to display is required).

Are you willing to send your system to us? (Yes/No)
Is your system a laptop or desktop?
If desktop, is it custom built, or manufactured?
If desktop, what is the make/model of your motherboard?
What is the make/model of your system? (COMPLETE model name required)
What is the model of your CPU?
What is the make/model of your failing display(s)?
If laptop, is your built-in display failing? (Yes/No)
What is your operating system?
Is it a 64-bit or 32-bit operating system?
What display driver version do you have installed?
What type of connection are you using? (HDMI, VGA, DP, DVI?)
What happens that results in the blackscreen failure?

Any/all information is valuable.

Thank you for your information & cooperation!

How to Apply a Custom Resolution

I've got a new NUC 5i5 and I'm trying to connect it to an early 2000's Panasonic Tau Analog CRT (HDMI to Component Video adapter).  The TV needs a 480i signal. By default, the lowest resolution I can select is 800x600.  I found the custom resolution screen in the HD Graphics app and added a 640x480 x 60i configuration, but the net result seems to be the new configuration being listed in the list of custom resolutions.  It doesn't show in any of the resolution drop downs, either in Win 10 Display settings, or HD graphics app, or Display adapter settings.  How do I actually apply this custom resolution?

My low end netbook is only 2012 with Intel Atom 2800, now I find there is no chance of an Intel graphics driver for Windows 10. Can this really be so?

It seems Intel is really not interested in past customers, luckily the Microsoft basic driver works (with wrong aspect ratio). If MS can do it please Intel do a simple one.

Problem with HD 530 on i5 6600K

Hi guys, some weeks ago I built my new pc with i5 6600K, MSI Gaming M5, 2*4GB Corsair ddr4 Vengeance LPX @3000mhz and a Corsair HX620W(I already got it). I have a problem because sometimes the screen doesn't work(black screen with a written message "not supported mode"). The screen starts with some "interferencies": sometimes the problems solves itself, sometimes i have to reboot the pc. I have already update the MB BIOS to the 1.4 version and I have updated the VGA driver to the latest avaiable version. It's not a problem of temperatures(idle 24°C, in game 42°C-I have a Noctua NH-U9S)... What can I do? Should I ask for an RMA? Is it a driver problem or is it related to the CPU/MB? Thank you!

I have just recently got a new laptop and it appears to be very slow and keeps crashing with the above message? The laptop has been upgraded to windows 10 through the free upgrade, don't know if that has anything to do with it?

Audio resolution problem with HD530 and i5 6600K

This deals with Intel Display Audio Driver.  If it is in the wrong place, please advise.

I built a HTPC with a Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 7 motherboard with HD530 and an Intel Skylake i5 6600K cpu.  64-bit.  The motherboard complies with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2.

I downloaded and installed the newest Intel HD Graphics driver version 15.40.7.4279 (Intel® Iris™, Iris™ Pro, and HD Graphics Production Driver for Windows® 7, 8.1, & 10)

In Advanced Properties under my DENON-HDAVR playback sound device, the '24-bit, 192000 Hz (Studio Quality)' default format did not show up in Windows 8.1, 64-bit Pro.  But it does show up in Windows 7 64-bit Pro.

The Intel HD Graphics zip file contains two folders under the 'DisplayAudio' folder.  One is entitled "6.16" and the other is "8.20".  The 8.20 version is automatically chosen and installed (the Intel Display Audio properties states version 8.20.0.541).  I just discovered that when I force the "6.16" .inf file to install, the missing resolution is listed.  While installing the 6.16 version, an "Update Driver Warning" is displayed stating the driver is not recommended.

I have switched back and forth between the two versions and 8.20 never displays the 24-bit, 192000 Hz resolution and the 6.16 version always does.

Does this indicate a problem with the Intel driver selection process for this motherboard?

As information, I initially installed the drivers that came with the motherboard.  I later updated those drivers with the drivers on the Gigabyte site.  The aforementioned resolution was missing in both cases within Windows 8.1.

Thank you.

I recently installed the Skylake i5 6500 and I'm experiencing problems with viewing video files that I never had with the onboard graphics with my Ivy Bridge CPU.  The main problem is continuous shutter with MP4 HD video files.  DVD files don't shutter, but have a lot of flashing.  I'm using the Asus Z170M Plus motherboard with 8gb of DDR4 RAM from Crucial and a PowerDVD player.

So far I've re-installed the graphics driver and checked all the settings, updated the BIOS and raised the video cache to the 1024MB maximum in the BIOS.

I have a Iris 6100 pro; however, some games (battle for middle earth I & II) say I have 0.0 display memory on bootcamp win 10. These games play on origional win 7 computer. Please Help!?
