Official Black-screen thread - We need your help!

Hello Graphics Communities!

For a very long time now we've been trying to track down, diagnose, and correct an issue that seems to be happening all across the board with Intel® Graphics.  Users, for various reasons - seem to have issues with OEM systems (and Intel® NUC's) losing their display for different events.

  • Installing new drivers
  • Rebooting
  • Computers idling, going into sleep or hibernation
  • Other random events

We have run into a stumbling block in fixing this issue, and that is that we are unable to reproduce the symptoms above.  We have ordered exact-matching systems, displays and cables - and matched our configurations to those of the users having problems, and we are completely unable to reproduce the problem.  The issue is complex, but in this particular case - it stems from the fact that two users with the same configuration are not guaranteed to have the problem, it varies from user to user, system to system, display to display.

What we at Intel® are asking now though is 2-fold.  If you are one of these users (or a business) experiencing a consistent black-screening issue as mentioned above, we would like to procure your COMPLETE system configuration.  This means, we want you to ship us (at our expense) - the System (desktop or laptop), display (TV, monitor) AND the cable (hdmi, dp, dvi, vga) used by your system when it starts to have a blackscreen failure.  If you are willing to do this, you should be aware that we will keep your system for an extended period, and will compensate you by replacing your setup.

NOW!  Even if you are not willing to send us your system, and would just like to inform us that you have a black-screen issue.  That is okay too. Even if you have already submitted this info in some of our other black-screen threads, feel free to submit it here too.  Please submit the following information into this thread so that we can continue to document all possible instances of it.  Just copy and paste the below list and put in relevant information (completely!).  *NOTE* If you have not already done so, please update your BIOS and Display Driver to the latest version available.  We cannot accept a report of a failing configuration that is not up to date.  Additionally, if you are running your display through a 3rd party device such as a projector or an AV/R (receiver), you need to show that the problem still occurs without the extra device connected (a direct connection from system to display is required).

Are you willing to send your system to us? (Yes/No)
Is your system a laptop or desktop?
If desktop, is it custom built, or manufactured?
If desktop, what is the make/model of your motherboard?
What is the make/model of your system? (COMPLETE model name required)
What is the model of your CPU?
What is the make/model of your failing display(s)?
If laptop, is your built-in display failing? (Yes/No)
What is your operating system?
Is it a 64-bit or 32-bit operating system?
What display driver version do you have installed?
What type of connection are you using? (HDMI, VGA, DP, DVI?)
What happens that results in the blackscreen failure?

Any/all information is valuable.

Thank you for your information & cooperation!

HP Probook 4510s persistant graphics challenge

Hello,

I own a Probook 4510s Notebook - NA915EA, it's warranty is already expired.

The problem lies with the Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family [PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2A42].

Whenever I do not install any driver for this part it works fine. The display resolution can be set to 1024x768, but I cannot connect a hdmi screen to it.

When I do install a graphics driver the following happens:

> I enable driver installation (gpedit.msc\Local Computer Policy\ Computer Config \ Administrative Settings \ System \ Device Installation \ Device Installation Restrictions \ Precent installation of devices not described by other policy settings -> Not Configured)

> I install the driver, WinSAT & Aero enabled.

> I disable driver installation to prevent windows from messing up

> I restart the Probook

> The Probook loads all drivers fine

> The welcome screen appears with black pixels all over the screen

> The welcome screen refreshes 3 times; every time the pixels are on a different place

> Blue Screen of Death

> The welcome screen refreshes 3 times; every time the pixels are on a different place (same as above)

> Screen turns black and desktop appears

> Spam pop-up:

- Display driver stopped responding and has recovered,

- Display driver Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows XP(R) stopped responding and has sucessfully recovered.

> The Probook freezes and I am forced to shut it down

I run Windows 7 - 64 bit with Service Pack 1

I hope there's someone out there with the solution

Req: Better GUI for changing driver settings :)

A recent driver update changed the control panel utility to be Win8 style inspired. Would it be possible to get a standard UI in a future version, at least as an option?

The new GUI takes up most of the screen, requires constant going back and forth between large and empty screens with few options in each. It's also a bit slow. I suppose it fits well the Win8 UI design guidelines of "big", "flat", and "few options", but I'm not sure how many graphics driver tweakers appreciate these traits.

A dialog or two using standard Windows controls would be my ideal, but also the previous skinned interface would be a noticeable upgrade (retrograde?).

3 displays on system with i7-4770 with Asus Z87-Deluxe mobo

I have a brand new system built with an ASUS z87-deluxe motherboard and an intel i7-4770 cpu.  I can only get 2 of my displays to work simultaneously although the computer recognizes 3 displays.  I know that on older systems and processors 2 displays, but one of the reasons I built this config, was specifically because it is supposed to support 3 displays.  Doc on the i7-4770 chip says that it does, and the info on the ASUS website indicates that it should as well... HOWEVER, I still can't get it to work.

Is there a setting I need to tweak?  Any help would be appreciated.

Latest update for HD Graphics 3000 gives reduced performance

Hey there,

I've updated my HD Graphics 3000 with latest 9.17.10.3223 drivers and I experience a very bad performance in Games after updating. I was playing "Remember me" before the update and the game is now so lagging and gives poor, reduced performance after the update. I'm not complaining, I just want you guys to check it.

I'm a quick updater and I used to update my drivers as soon as the new drivers come out. So, I always look forward for new updates and expect at least a little increased performance after a new update. As a gamer I'll be pleased if I can help Intel graphics developing community.

Thank you.

"Display Power Saving Technology" setting not saved

Hi,

I'm using Asus Zenbook Prime, with Intel HD 4000, driver version 9.17.10.2843, Windows 8

When unplugged from power, I've noticed that the screen can get really ugly (washed out colors), I've noticed that it's related to the option "Power\Power Conservation Features\Display Power Saving Technology" in the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel.

After I've disabled this option, everything looks great again, but when I restart the computer, the colors get washed out again.

As I understand the setting is not saved, and everytime I restart the computer, it gets restarted to the default setting.

Please make it to be saved!

Thanks

Intel driver updates won't install?

I'm running Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium on a laptop with Intel Core i3 processor.

The update utility didn't work (firefox) so I found the update manually (Version: 15.22.50.2509)

Whenever I try to install it the dialogue box just closes with out any error messages or anything.

I tried both the.zip and the .exe.

How can I fix this problem?

Thanks!

Hello again everyone.  Following in the same spirit as the last Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3600 driver feedback thread, I'm making a new one to announce our latest driver release.  Version 1091 just went live today, and I would again like to ask everyone to provide constructive feedback on it.

The link to the download is here; Download Center

The same rules apply for this thread as did apply for the last one.  This thread is dedicated specifically to this driver and the feedback for this driver.  This thread is not a discussion place for Windows* 8 GMA 3600 driver questions/complaints, nor is it for Windows* 7 GMA (64-bit) driver requests/complaints.  Any such comments will be promptly deleted.  However, please feel free to use any of the already-existing threads of that topic to discuss and provide feedback there.

Along with the feedback, if there are any new issues that resulted from the new driver, please provide detailed information on where you saw them, how it happened, and what steps to reproduce.

Thank you,

Cheers.

Intel HD 4000 Graphical/T&L Issues

$

I recently purchased an HP laptop with an Intel i3 3110/Intel HD 4000 chipset. I don't do a lot of heavy gaming on it, or gaming at all. However I do play the game Anarchy Online. It's an older game that doesn't have many requirements.

The laptop came with driver version 2932 installed. With this driver, the game ran great but did suffer from single digit framerates in some places. The reason for this is, the game requires a graphics card which supports T&L for optimum performance. With driver 2932, the option to play with T&L enabled was never there.

I updated the driver to 3165 and the option to play with T&L enabled becomes available. However, I experience a lot of graphical glitches, from the ground disappearing to random lights stretching across the screen.

Some screenshots:

glitchao.png

^^In this screenshot, the text graphic on my character should actually be a yellow number showing the XP I just gained.^^

glitchao2.png

glitchao6.png

Again these are not issues I had with the previous driver, but for better performance you need T&L enabled. I know this is an old game, and an old game + a new system doesn't always mean it's playable.

Some specs:

Intel i3 3110 2.4Ghz

Intel HD 4000

4GB RAM

Windows 8 64

Even with worse CPU's and GPU's, I have never experienced any problem while playing this game.

What low-end graphic cards can I use? PCI? CardBus? PCMIA? Confused..

Hello All!

I have a Toshiba P105-S6004 laptop and I am running Windows 7 32 bit, 4GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo T2600 @2.1 GHz.

Not impressive, but it's what I can afford.

According to the  official system specs, the expansions options are:

1 PC Card slot support 1 Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16,

CardBus

ExpressCard slot supporting Ex

pressCard/34 and ExpressCard/54

According to the explanation from this link, I should be able to expand to PMCIA, Express Card or Card Bus 16.

Also, the chipset: Intel 945GM, says that it can be expanded as well:

PCI Express Revision1.1
PCI Express Configurations ‡1x16

, but isn't that for desktops only?

If Card Bus 16 is the equivalent of a desktop, I can then use a desktop graphic card, or a graphic card at the very least, right?

Or a PCI, PMCIA, some sort of graphic card, right?

What starter graphic cards can I use? After I test it out, I can upgrade and go fancier.

Details on driver services/processes (igfx*)?

It's been asked already, but I didn't find a detailed authoritative explanation. Could someone from Intel explain in detail the function of igfxpers.exe and igfxsrvc.exe? Do they need to run if this functionality is not needed?

Also, as I understand it, hkcmd.exe handles hotkeys. Is there a reason it still runs even with hotkeys disabled (most recent version of drivers)?

Screen Flickering In WMC During Live/Recorded TV, Have Intel Graphics 4000HD

Please help. I just completed a new build for an HTPC and for whatever reason my screen is flickering during both live and recorded tv playback. It's like a muted strobing flicker, and it's not constant or every show/channel. I have no idea what to do, I feel like I have tried everything.

Here is the info on my build:

Case - Silverstone Grandia Series SST-GD05

Mobo - AsRock H77 Pro4-M Micro ATX

CPU - I3-3225 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHZ Intel HD 4000 Graphics

RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2X4)

SSD - Intel 520 Series Cherryville 120GB

HDD - (2) WD Black 1TB

Cbl Tnr - Ceton Infinitv4

Optical - ASUS Black Blu-Ray/DVD

PSU - Antec BP350W

Everything else is running like a champ, just the screen flickering issue during WMC.

Thank you so much for any help. It's driving me nuts.

HD 3000 driver forced subpixel antialising after update to 9.x version

$

I have Lenovo X220 notebook (Core i5, HD 3000), Windows 7 x64 SP1. I can't stand any kind of antialiasing so I use Windows Classic theme and have ClearType disabled in Performance Options.

After video driver update from version 8.15.10.2769 to 9.17.10.2843 (Lenovo specific versions) I noticed the black text on grey background is blurry and some kind of antialiasing (different than the Windows one) was applied after the update. I couldn't find any way to disable it, no such option in Intel Graphics panel. The only way to get rid of it was rollback to old 8 version. Notice I'm talking about Windows desktop, not a 3D games.

Is there any solution for it (at least edit a value in registry) ? I don't want to use older (possibly buggy and vulnerable) version but this kind of forced antialiasing is blocking issue for me. Attached screenshot (poor image quality) shows the difference, it needs a fullscreen view. Notice the forced red "ghosting" on the right edge of black pixels.

IntelDriver.jpg

More observations. It affects all output on the notebook display, not a text rendering only. For example BMP or PNG image with screenshot of Start menu without antialiased text also looks blurry now. On the other hand digital output to external monitor is not affected (not blurry). It seems as the new driver set some kind of hardware antialiasing (or less sharpness) in the notebook display controller, is it possible ? I've tried all advanced Intel Graphics panel settings and nothing helped.

The change (non-blurry to blurry text) happens in the middle of a new driver installation, even before restart.

Thanks.
